OverviewThe Research and Development department is looking for a motivated, team player to join its team of highly skilled professionals. The position will manage research and development projects, provide technical guidance as well as administrating and maintaining the department’s project database.
The candidate must be a dedicated, self-motivated individual able to arrive at new solutions and apply technology in new ways working independently and in teams. The candidate must have a record of work assignments that demonstrate flexibility and learning new areas and able to handle multiple assignments with changing deadlines and priorities.

- $100,000 – $130,000 a year

ResponsibilitiesCore Responsibilities
- Ensures implementation of Company safety, health and environmental programs for employees whose work is directed. Ensures that safe work practices are followed and the environment is fully protected in accordance with Company policy and governmental regulations.

- Manage R&D projects in assigned areas and monitor R&D projects that are managed by other Company organizations. This responsibility will include the evaluation of R&D needs and making recommendations about potential solutions and projects. The engineer will be expected to provide technical expertise and guidance for the projects; develop project rationales, cost benefit analyses, budget estimates, scopes-of-work, requests for proposals, contractor selection and bid evaluations; evaluate results and recommend implementation plans.
- Analyzes and controls project expenditures.
- Provide technical support and guidance to operating departments during project reviews to keep projects on track and within budget.
- Evaluates project results, recommends follow-on work and coordinates with users to implement results.
- Maintains state of the art technical expertise and cognizance in discipline area through contacts and interaction with leading experts in the technical community; as directed, conducts studies on advanced technologies of interest to the Company’s management.
- Represents the Company and articulates its need on committees and task forces established to coordinate industry research efforts.
- Demonstrates cooperative arrangements with other R&D organizations, whereby R&D projects of common interest may be jointly funded.
- May perform other related assignments as well.
QualificationsRequired Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering

Relevant Work Experience
- Must have five years applicable work experience in engineering support within the utility industry Required

Additional Physical Demands
- Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
- Must be willing to travel to all Con Edison sites requiring support including buildings, plants and substations.
- Travel to off-site vendor locations, industry committee meeting venues etc. may also be required from time to time.

This position is eligible for telework, which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

This role performs simple routine engineering design tasks with standard techniques—and assists more senior engineers in preparing plans, designs, computation methods, and reports.
Responsibilities
- The Assistant Engineer Level 1 shall work under the direction of a Manager or Engineer.
- Perform elementary engineering work in scope development, design, request for contract development proposals, or capital construction oversight and/or inspection.
- Assistant Engineer Level 1 may perform related support functions for capital projects, such as project controls, environmental engineering, or various engineering/technical functions.
- Assistant Engineer Level 1 will also receive training in engineering, construction, project management, and/or capital project support work of moderate difficulty and responsibility.
- Participate in site visits and fieldwork at various facilities and infrastructure of the MTA operating agencies, including active construction sites.
- Manage and contribute to a variety of challenging projects.
- Depending upon assignment, various shifts/days may encompass full participation in all aspects of the organization.
- Apply academic learning to engineering principles, critical thinking, and analysis.
- Perform other duties as required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in the appropriate Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural, Communications, Track, Signals, Environmental, Fire Protection) from an EAC/ABET accredited institution.
- Must have a minimum of eighteen (18) months as an Engineer Trainee.
- Successful completion of the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Competencies:
- Must be capable of working on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Federal, State, and local jurisdiction permitting regulations is a plus.
- Analytical ability, pro-active attitude, willingness to learn, and an ability to think “outside the box” when required.
- A general understanding of current design, engineering software, and Microsoft Office is required.
